Hollow Sections (Square Hollow Sections & Rectangular Hollow Section)


Hollow sections are the most versatile and efficient form for construction and mechanical applications. Many of the strongest and most impressive structures in the world today would not have been possible without hollow sections. The tubular form is inherently strong and efficient. It gives buildings a better strength-to-weight ratio than those using comparable steel, concrete or timber products.

Hollow sections have been used in iconic structures such as the London Eye, Emirates Stadium and spaceframe structure of the world record-breaking JCB Dieselmax. Also, they are ideal for everyday applications such as vehicle trailers, fences, and handrails.

 

The following are the advantages of using hollow sections-

  • The volume of the material is greatly reduced hence it becomes an economic design.
  • The self-weight of the section is also reduced hence less hoisting and transportation cost.
  • There's better stress distribution than a solid section
  • Torsion resistance is high compared to solid section( high torsional stiffness)
  • In case of bending and torsion, the stress is less near the neutral axis hence use of hollow section (in which there's no material near NA) will be more appropriate section.
